Description

This is a highly recommended hike that leads through splendid scenery. The via ferrata is a small climbing installation but should not be underestimated. The blacksmith and manager of the former Wolf Glanwellhütte (destroyed during WWI), Luigi Gilarduzzi (nicknamed Menighel), built this path in 1907 from his hut (now Rifugio Giussani) directly to the Cantore hut (now Rifugio Giussani). The Scala del Menighel was the first via ferrata in the Cortina d'Ampezzo area. To overcome the steep exposed wall up to Forcella Fontananegra, almost 200 iron rungs were used.

Access & starting point

From Passo Falzarego in the direction of Cortina. A few kilometres after the turnoff to the Cinque Torri, turn left (signposted) toward Rifugio Dibona, along a road that is initially still paved (up to 2053 m). There is a relatively large car park near the hut.

Approach

From the hut, follow the dirt road to the bottom station of the cable car. Then ascend quickly along switchbacks (trail no. 442) toward the south face of the Tofana, then follow trail no. 404 to the left. Ascend to the junction with the Lipella ferrata, and continue to Forcella Col dei Bòs (2331 m). From there, follow the sign for Scala del Menighel. The trail continues downhill into Val Travenanzes and to a pasture, where the path turns right to reach the start of the ferrata.

Route

This is a fairly long hike and should not be underestimated. The ferrata is not particularly difficult but is very exposed. From the end of the ferrata to Rifugio Giussani, you still need to climb about 380 m of elevation gain on the trail.

Technical Details

This is a short but very exposed ferrata, fully equipped with steel cables. The numerous iron rungs form a kind of staircase, making it possible to overcome the steep rock face.

Descent

From Rifugio Giussani, descend along the wide path to the cable car station, and continue along the ascent path back to the starting point.
