Very long route, scenically rewarding, along a protected path and with a short via ferrata on the Sasso delle Dieci. The ascent to Sasso di Santa Croce is also suitable for experienced hikers with a steady step and good physical condition. However, for the section on the Sasso delle Dieci via ferrata, proper via ferrata equipment is recommended.
From Val Badia, go past Pedraces and continue toward San Leonardo until you reach the parking area at the bottom station of the Santa Croce chairlift. Take the lift (with one transfer) to Rifugio Santa Croce (2045 m).
From the upper station, quickly reach the mountain hut with a sanctuary. Continue until the fork and turn right along trail no. 7 until the start of the route (2240 m).
The route ascends via the west face of Sasso di Santa Croce, which is only partially secured (6 sections with steel cables). With good weather conditions, the trail is manageable, though it is exposed, so should not be underestimated! A sure foot and a head for heights are essential, as there are long stretches without protection. Avoid this route in case of rain or poor weather. After the Forcella Sasso della Croce (2600 m) – approx. 2 hours of ascent – the path becomes a more manageable hike, leading in about 30 minutes to the summit of Sasso di Santa Croce (2907 m). From the summit, descend gently to the fork and follow the signs to Sasso delle Dieci. An easy trail leads to the start of the ferrata at 2960 m. In around 15 minutes of fairly steep climbing (some smooth and exposed rock) you reach Sasso delle Dieci (3026 m).
The ascent to Sasso di Santa Croce is partially protected: the trail is exposed in parts, and follows the west face of the mountain to Forcella Sasso della Croce, continuing along easier terrain to the summit. The final ascent of Sasso delle Dieci is via a short, well-secured, steep and exposed ferrata, which is also used for the descent.
Descend along the same path as the ascent, or alternatively traverse Forcella Sasso della Croce and pass Forcella de Medesc (2531 m – trail 12B) to return to the starting point (a longer but easier route).
