This route is primarily used as a descent after completing the difficult Giuseppe Olivieri via ferrata (described in Route 22). However, the trail described here can also be undertaken on its own as a standalone excursion from Rifugio Pomedes to the Ra Valles station of the Freccia nel Cielo cable car on Tofana di Mezzo. The most exposed parts of the ascent are secured with steel cables, and the steepest sections are aided by ladders. If you take the chairlift to Rifugio Pomedes and descend by cable car from Ra Valles, this becomes a short and scenic route—though a sure foot and steady pace are still required in the unsecured sections.
From the main road toward Cortina, turn left at Lacedel onto a good road (signs for the Col Druscié cable car / Ristorante Pié Tofana). Continue to the bottom station of the chairlift for Rifugio Duca d’Aosta, and take it up to the hut. From there, take the second chairlift to the starting point at Rifugio Pomedes (2203 m).
Tip: If you plan to return via the Olivieri Trail, rather than descending with the cable car, you can drive up to Rifugio Duca d’Aosta (rough road) and then take the chairlift to Rifugio Pomedes.
From Rifugio Pomedes, head right across a wide scree slope and a large glacial cirque, following faint but visible tracks northwest to the base of the route, which is visible from the hut.
Though usually descended, this path can also be climbed and offers a pleasant Dolomite outing—relatively easy and ideal for less experienced hikers or those not in perfect condition (access and descent made easier with ski lifts). It can also be linked as an ascent to the Gianni Aglio via ferrata, making it a long and demanding trip for fit and skilled mountaineers.
A relatively short ferrata, partially exposed, with two steep ladders and steel cables securing the exposed passages. There are some unsecured sections that require great attention and sure footing.
Descend along the ascent route or continue to Ra Valles station for a cable car ride down to Col Druscié.
