Description

An easy via ferrata with seven short ladders at the start. About half the ascent is secured with steel cables. The gorges alternate with some rocky ledges exposed on a ledge system that crosses the western face of Col del Fuoco without gaining much elevation. The protections consist of scattered cords, some of which are not secured, requiring attention—especially on the descent. Often described as part of the Sorapiss circuit, this two-day loop includes the Vandelli ferrata, the Minazio trail, and the Francesco Berti ferrata.

Access & starting point

From Misurina or Cortina d'Ampezzo to Passo Tre Croci (1805 m). Parking is available at or just below the pass.

Approach

From Passo Tre Croci, descend the road (toward Misurina) until a forest trail branches off to the right (trail no. 215 – Alta Via Dolomiti). Follow a comfortable trail through the woods, nearly flat, to Rifugio Vandelli (1926 m). Just before the hut, you'll encounter a few short exposed sections, well protected with ropes, and some ladders. From the hut, follow trail no. 243, and in about 30 minutes you'll reach the start of the route at 2110 m (marked with red lines and stone cairns). The start is directly at the base of the massive western face of Col del Fuoco.

Route

A relatively long hike, which despite its moderate technical difficulty, must be taken seriously. Solid mountain experience and steady footing are essential! Orientation is straightforward, and the climbing sections present only minimal rockfall risk.

Technical Details

An easy ferrata with a long but very shaded approach. After the hut, there is no more drinkable water! The ropes and anchors are in good condition, although a couple of the ladders are slightly damaged. Between the rungs of some ladders, no protection is possible, so extreme caution is required, especially on the descent.

Descent

The descent follows the via ferrata back to Rifugio Vandelli, and from there returns to the starting point.
