Description

This is an easy ferrata that starts at an altitude of 3190 m. It involves a descent of over 1000 m of elevation loss. Along the route, you'll encounter many WWI military posts. Just after the start, there's a very steep but technically easy ledge that leads down to Forcella Tofana (3125 m). The ferrata begins at the ridge that connects Tofana di Mezzo (3244 m) to Tofana di Dentro (3230 m). From the summit, the route follows a slippery scree gully northward (the trail is not always easy to find). From Forcella Formenton (2800 m), the trail becomes exposed again and is only partially protected by steel cables; crossing the steep gullies in the final section requires great caution!

Access & starting point

Via Val Pusteria, then Val di Landro, heading to Cortina d’Ampezzo until the lower station of the Freccia nel Cielo cable car, next to the Olympic stadium. There’s a car park at the base.

Approach

Ascend using the three sections of the Freccia nel Cielo cable car to 3190 m. From there, climb the steel ladder and follow the long trail along the ridge to the summit of Tofana di Mezzo (3244 m). Descend briefly and return to the sign marked "Formenton."

Route

After an easy lift-accessed approach, the route involves a long descent. At about the halfway point, the "Baracca degli Alpini" (Alpine hut) offers shelter in case of sudden weather changes.

Technical Details

With its convenient ascent (by cable car!), this high-alpine ferrata above Cortina is often crowded in peak season. The view from the ridge of Tofana di Mezzo and Tofana di Dentro is unique: you can see the Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo to the north, Cortina below, and the Cristallo and Sorapiss ranges. The ferrata can also be done in reverse — starting at Ra Valles station and ascending back to Tofana di Mezzo, returning via cable car. The steel cables and anchors are in good condition (some are new). However, many segments are hikeable — a steady step is essential!

Descent

From Tofana di Dentro (signposted "Formenton"), follow the red trail markers downhill, passing the Baracca degli Alpini, to Forcella Formenton (2860 m). From here, a more challenging descent along the eastern slope demands care and sure footing (some cables). Trail markings (red and white) become sparse further on, making navigation difficult in poor visibility. After a narrow ledge across the rock face, you finally see the day's destination: the Ra Valles station. Follow trail no. 407 to a junction below the lift station. From there, head right and ascend to 2470 m (approx. 110 m of elevation gain). Descend by cable car (check operating hours!).
