Description

The via ferrata to the Forcella del Sassolungo (also known as Ferrata Furcela de Saslonch) is a route inaugurated in 2022 that allows access to Rifugio Demetz—connecting the Sasso Piatto and Sassolungo groups between Val Gardena and Val di Fassa. The ferrata is of medium difficulty and is an interesting alternative for reaching the hut and enjoying impressive views of the Dolomite massifs surrounding Passo Sella.

Access & starting point

At the base of the Passo Sella cable car. You can reach the Pass either from Val di Fassa or Val Gardena.

Approach

The approach can be done entirely on foot. If using the Passo Sella cable car (2180 m) to Rifugio Toni Demetz (2685 m), you save about an hour of hiking. From the cable car, descend on trail 525 and follow signs to the ferrata. If approaching on foot, use trail CAI 525. After about 45–50 minutes, you'll see the signs for the start of the ferrata (1 hour from the car park).

Route

The ferrata is modern, in excellent condition, not too difficult, and very climbable. The rock is sometimes brittle and, being a new route, still needs cleaning. Watch for loose rocks and scree. The ferrata is near Passo Sella and allows you to quickly complete a beautiful climb in a stunning setting, ending at a mountain hut.

Technical Details

The "Furcela de Saslonch" via ferrata features more than 500 m of climbing, with varied scrambling over iron ropes and ramps, and some steep climbs gaining nearly 200 m elevation. The central section has an emergency exit. The upper section includes an exposed jagged ridge and a narrow suspension bridge. In a few steps you descend to Rifugio Toni Demetz. The rocky scenery is impressive, surrounded by the steep walls of Punta Cinque Dita and the Sassolungo massif. Most of the difficulties are grade B, with some sections at grade C.

Descent

Descend from the ferrata via trail to Rifugio Demetz (2685 m – 10 minutes from end of ferrata – total 2 hrs 40 min). To return, take trail 525 back to Passo Sella (approx. 4 hrs total).
