Description

One of the most difficult via ferratas in this guidebook, together with the Tabaretta on Ortles. The route, created in 2014, is perfectly equipped and has less complex sections, but overall can be considered consistently difficult. The lower part is extremely exposed, making a return on this relatively problematic route not easy.

Access & starting point

Through Val Venosta to Naturno. Park in the large car park near the valley station of the Unterstell cable car, from where you walk west along fields and vineyards for a few minutes to the parking area of the Reinhold Messner visitor centre.

Approach

From the parking area, proceed west towards the entrance to Val Senales where there is a parking area for visitors to the Reinhold Messner museum, Castel Juval. From the parking area, follow the Rio Senales stream (marked with a sign and bee-themed figure) to reach the start. ⚠️ In 2021, a landslide occurred near the suspension bridge – the route has been moved to the other side of the stream. The suspension bridge can still be used in both directions.

Route

A beautiful via ferrata that requires significant arm strength and is an excellent technical climbing route. Although the route doesn't have a large elevation gain, its length should not be underestimated. The first part of the ascent is extremely exposed; crossing the ancient irrigation channels (waale) is adventurous! Turning back after this section is not possible without a rope and climbing gear.

Technical Details

Challenging steep ascent, partly overhanging. Mostly secured only with a steel rope. A short lanyard for extra safety can be useful. Good climbing technique, adherence, arm strength, and experience are essential. The ferrata can be done all year round (when free of snow); in summer, from noon onwards, the wall becomes very hot! Due to its easy access and proximity to residential areas, the route is often underestimated! Attention to proper equipment is necessary.

Descent

From the exit, follow the path along the fence to a gate, where it meets the hiking trail to Unterstell. In about 25 minutes, you can reach the upper station and descend with the Unterstell cable car. Alternatively, follow trail no. 10 back to the starting point (1 hour).
