Description

For the most part, this is more of a panoramic hike, but it should not be underestimated due to its length and exposure.

Access & starting point

From Chiusa in Val d'Isarco, head to Val di Funes. Continue through S. Pietro and S. Maddalena to the car park at Malga Zannes (1670 m).

Approach

From Malga Zannes, follow trail signs for Günther-Messner-Steig and Herrensteig/Tullen (trails 32 and 32a). There is also a steeper variant, 32b, which merges into 32a.

Route

Overall, there are a few equipped sections that always require steady footing. Due to the long itinerary, good physical condition and stable weather are prerequisites. A sudden weather change can make retreat difficult because of the lengthy return.

Technical Details

The most demanding sections are in the middle part of the route, after the summit of Mt. Tullen (2653 m). If conditions and fitness allow, a harder route with cables can be followed for a more technical ascent (adds 30 minutes). If staying on the Messner ferrata, one reaches a steep gully equipped with steel cable. From here, the ferrata proceeds to an exposed section near the ridge.

Descent

Along trail 4 to Rifugio Genova, then back to the starting point.
