Description

A short ferrata with a steep and difficult exit wall, few holds, and usually wet (small waterfall nearby); short ferrata with long ascent and descent. In the first section, the cable is in poor condition; the difficult passages are well equipped.

Access & starting point

Reach Corvara via Val Gardena (via Passo Gardena) or from Val Pusteria and through Val Badia. Take the Boè cable car from Crep de Mont and continue with the Vallon chairlift to Rifugio Franz Kostner al Vallon, 2537 m (summer opening mid-June to mid-September, www.altabadia.org).

Approach

From the top of the Vallon chairlift, follow the signs to the ferrata. The trail is also marked with red dots.

Route

A long ascent with a short ferrata section. As an alternative to descending via the Normal Route, one can take the Lichtenfels Trail (trail 672 – the last section is uphill and retraces the same path in descent). A grand circular tour for experienced mountaineers (requires more descent time).

Technical Details

A high-altitude climb requiring sure footing, especially near the summit ridge of Piz Boè. In fog or fresh snow, navigating the wide summit plateaus can become problematic!

Descent

From the summit, trail no. 638 returns without particular difficulty to the starting point (signs at the summit); approx. 1½ hours.
