This route follows old military paths from World War I to the summit of Monte Paterno, with spectacular views. It's a popular day hike. Depending on the season, snow or ice may be present inside the tunnels, especially early in summer, which can make progress difficult.
From Val Pusteria, head toward Dobbiaco, then turn into Val di Landro (direction Cortina), continuing to Carbonin.
Turn left toward Misurina. Just before the lake, turn left onto the private toll road to Rifugio Auronzo.
In summer (June to September), a bus is also available from Dobbiaco.
From Rifugio Auronzo (2326 m), follow the wide trail toward Forcella Lavaredo, then continue toward Rifugio Tre Cime (2405 m). Shortly before the hut, a sign indicates the trail toward Galleria Paterno. Pass the sausage-shaped rock formation called Salsiccia, then ascend toward the gallery entrance.
The route includes a moderately steep climb through WWI tunnels and exposed ledges, partly secured. Be cautious after the tunnels: snow and ice are often present. From Forcella del Camoscio, the route descends through a narrow gully. Follow red triangle markers (some sections may be slippery). The return follows the old war path to Forcella Lavaredo. The final descent includes exposed sections, where absolute sure-footedness is necessary.

A highly interesting route along old wartime paths, almost fully secured with steel cables and ladders, though some parts are unsecured.
