This popular route, often used as the return path from Rifugio Forcella Pian di Cengia, is also one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Monte Paterno. Although the trail is well-equipped and very panoramic, many hikers find it unexpectedly challenging due to its length and exposed passages. Most of the route is protected with new steel cables and modern anchors. However, some parts remain unsecured and exposed, requiring sure footing at all times. The section between Forcella Lavaredo and Forcella del Camoscio climbs steeply and is often crowded. It's considered the more difficult part, though it's technically moderate. The descent involves narrow passages with steep terrain and should be approached with total focus and confidence on exposed sections.
From Val Pusteria, turn into Val di Landro (direction Cortina), continue toward Carbonin, then turn left toward Misurina. Before the lake, turn left onto the toll road leading to Rifugio Auronzo. Alternatively, during summer (June–September), take the bus from Dobbiaco.
From Rifugio Auronzo (2326 m), follow the wide trail to Forcella Lavaredo, then along the dirt road to Rifugio Pian di Cengia. After 200 m of elevation gain, a signpost at Forcella Pian di Cengia (2522 m) marks the route. The trail ascends gradually and veers east through a scree slope before reaching the start of the ferrata at Forcella delle Forcelle (2552 m).
This route is moderately long and technically accessible, but never to be underestimated. It's scenic and includes varied terrain, often with steep drop-offs. Climbers must remain vigilant, especially in early summer when snowfields and wet sections can complicate the descent. Variations exist, but the descent from the summit and Forcella Lavaredo is more scenic and stable, yet still requires absolute confidence on exposed paths.

A ferrata with exposed sections, but mostly well secured. At Forcella del Camoscio, you can choose to exit the route and descend if needed.
From Monte Paterno, retrace the ascent path to Forcella del Camoscio (2650 m). From here, you can: Descend via Ferrata De Luca-Innerkofler to Rifugio Tre Cime (2405 m) or, for a shorter return, follow the old war trail that runs below Forcella Lavaredo, partially exposed and slippery but scenic.
